Paramedic I is the first of three semesters of training that must be taken consecutively, without interruption, in preparation for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians certification exam. The goal of the program is to prepare competent entry-level Paramedics in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains with or without exit points at the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician and/or Emergency Medical Technician, and/or Emergency Medical Responder levels.
 
This course is designed to build upon a student’s understanding of EMS as a profession, and covers the importance of research, safety, documentation, communication and ethics. The student’s knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and pathophysiology will be expanded upon.  The student will gain a comprehensive understanding of advanced patient assessment, advanced airway procedures, pharmacology and medication administration in preparation to assess and treat various trauma emergencies.  Students will begin their clinical experience during this course.

Admission Requirements: A student must be a high school graduate or equivalent and meet the following:

Current EMT certification
        A qualifying ACCUPLACER Next Generation Reading score of 250 or equivalent.

BIO:168 Human Anatomy and Physiology I and BIO:173 Human Anatomy and Physiology II OR
BIO:157 Human Biology
*The anatomy and physiology class requirement needs to be taken with in 5 years of entering the paramedic program. This must be discussed prior to registration with the program director.

  • Mandatory orientation held at the NICC Peosta campus Thursday August 13th from 9AM to 1PM in room L210.  Please bring with you your laptop if you will be using one, a writing utensil, paper, your drivers license and your social security number (if memorized) or your card.

Textbooks are required and are not included. The custom textbook package can be purchased through NICC’s Bookstore. Additional fees associated with course are:
 Approximately $300.00 for student uniforms to be worn during class, labs, clinical and field experiences.
• There is an additional $117.00 fee for criminal history, drug testing and vaccination and health history tracking. Students with significant findings on their background checks or incomplete health and vaccination histories will not be able to complete this course.

• $604.00 of the Paramedic I program cost are fees for physical supplies or services that the College purchases for your use on the first day of classes. Accordingly, this $604.00 cannot be refunded once class begins.
Paramedic II will run January - May 2027. Paramedic III will begin in May 2027 Final testing will be in late July, 2027.
