Throughout this independent study course, you will dive into the purpose, material compatibility, clinical manipulation, and precise application of specialized dental materials, medications, dressings, and diagnostic tests. The following are Core Curriculum & Topics: 
Cavity Liners & Bases~The clinical manipulation and precise application of cavity liners, high-strength cement bases, desensitizing agents, and modern dental bonding systems.
Dry Socket Medication~How to identify risk factors, signs, and symptoms of alveolar osteitis, alongside the exact procedural steps for the gentle placement and removal of intra-alveolar medications.
Periodontal Dressings~The clinical purpose, ideal structural characteristics, retention techniques, and hands-on placement of protective periodontal dressings.
Pulp Vitality Testing~How to perform clinical diagnostic procedures and evaluate the unique factors that influence the reliability of testing pulp vitality using both electric pulp testers and thermal diagnostic methods.

Please read:  To enroll in this Section 1 Expanded Functions course, you must meet at least one of the following criteria: Be a graduate of an ADA-accredited dental assistant program; hold a current DANB Certification; OR have at least three months of clinical practice as a registered dental assistant; OR have at least three months of clinical practice as a dental assistant in a state that does not require registration. This course is entirely self-study, giving you the flexibility to complete assigned readings. evaluation measures, and clinical skills on your own schedule. All components must be finished within one year of your registration date. Hands-on clinical skills must be perormed at your place of employment. Both the learner and the employer/supervising dentist must co-sign the competency verification forms upcon successful completion of the tasks. A comprehensive post-test is required at the end of the course. You must achieve a score of 75% or higher on the post-test to pass and earn your CEUs.
