The competency-based semi-truck driving training program is designed to train for a career that offers freedom, stability and competitive pay. You will develop skills in backing, turning and safe driving on both rural and suburban roads using a variety of training techniques including web-based and classroom instruction. All commercial drivers, by federal law, must be able to "read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public, understand highway traffic signs and signals, respond to official inquiries, and make entries on reports and records." Notice

Please read:  Before registration you will need to obtain a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) which includes three tests taken at the Department of Transportation (DOT): General Knowledge, Air Brake and Combination Vehicle. After you obtain the CLP, you will need to register with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearing house (clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov/). You will also need to pass and pay for your Department of Transportation (DOT) physical and pre-employment drug/alcohol screening. The drug screening will need to be within 30 days of the start date of class. (To locate a Certified Medical Examiner go to https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/national-registry/national-registry-certified-medical-examiners) Prior to registration send a copy of your commercial learner's permit, proof of FMSCA Clearinghouse query, and DOT physical. (Pre-employment drug/alcohol screening documents can be sent within 30 days prior to the start date to remain enrolled) by email to gomollm@nicc.edu or U.S. mail at Michael Gomoll, Evening Success Coach, 700 Main St, Dubuque, Iowa 52001. Registration deadline is one week prior to the start date. This competency-based Entry Level Driver Training course includes CDL simulator training, Bumper-to-Bumper online coursework, classroom lecture, hands-on Behind-The-Wheel training, and Class A CDL testing with Federal DOT examiners. The course is scheduled for 4 week sessions, but students proficient in pre-trip inspection, range and road skills may complete the CDL testing prior to the end date. Endorsement certifications for Hazardous Materials, Bus Driving and Tanker will require additional training and testing.
