This 180-hour certificate program prepares students to collect, transport and process blood and other specimens for laboratory analysis. The program includes 60 hours of classroom instruction in anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system, infection control and safety principles, medical terminology and customer service skills, based on the latest Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) standards. Students will also learn to meet minimum competencies in phlebotomy by participating in 120 clinical hours at various local laboratories. Students who successfully complete this program will be eligible and adequately prepared to take the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Phlebotomy Technician certification examination.

Program Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • High school diploma or equivalency and transcripts
  • Provide proof of MMR and TDAP vaccine, Covid, Varicella immunization, Hepatitis B series and Two-Step Tuberculin Skin Test
  • Pass background check
  • Pass drug screening
  • One written letter of recommendation from a non-family source
  • Personal interview with a program official

Notice

Please read:  Pre-registration Requirement: Each Phlebotomy Technician student must complete a minimum of a 60 minute job shadow with a phlebotomist in the field and submit documentation prior to registration. Students must submit documentation of high school diploma or equivalent. All students must be 18 years or older before the start of the class. Finally students will be interviewed prior to registration (class seats are limited). Interviews will be offered to all serious inquiries who meet program requirements, please contact NICC to schedule an interview. at 844-642-2338 ext. 1399. Pre-class: Mandatory Orientation will be held prior to the first day of Phlebotomy Technician class. This will be held on Thursday, April 15th, 2024 from 4:30 - 6:00 pm at the NICC Calmar Campus. Clinical location, dates and times are TBD. Students will be assigned a clinical location and times after start of class.
